Investing in Your Future: The Top SIPP Providers for Expats in 2024

February 03, 2024 Book a Free Portfolio Review

As I did my top platforms for expats in 2024 I wanted to show my best SIPP options for expats in 2024. I have done this in previous years but as prices and platforms change wanted to keep things updated. This is not financial advice, this is my opinion on what I think are the best SIPP providers in the expat marketplace.

Dealing with SIPPs regularly and pension transfers being a topic many ask about, I like to keep on top of what platforms have good applications and transfers, customer service and their pricing.

If you have any questions, please contact me using the button at the bottom of the page or by visiting my contact page.

Before I go too much further wanted to link you to the pension red flags article that I have written prior and the offshore bond article as I think these tie in nicely with this topic and have a lot of supporting content.

However, due to regulation, it is becoming increasingly less likely that advisers are putting clients in offshore bonds with their pension(s). I am still getting a few emails each year with some getting proposed these as options (always on the full commission charges) so please do read these as well in addition to this article as believe they will give a rounded insight for you in regards to the pension options.

Advantages of SIPPs for Expats

Expats can derive several benefits from SIPPs. Firstly, SIPPs offer a diverse array of investment options, including stocks, funds, bonds, and cash, enabling individuals to customize their portfolios based on risk tolerance and financial objectives.

Secondly, SIPPs provide flexibility in investment management, allowing expatriates to make active investment decisions or seek professional advice. Lastly, SIPPs offer tax efficiency, featuring tax-free growth and the ability to withdraw funds following the tax regulations of their country of residence.

Comparing SIPP Providers

When selecting a SIPP provider, it’s crucial to compare factors such as fees, investment choices, and customer service. Noteworthy SIPP providers for expatriates include Utmost, Novia Global, and Friends Provident International. Opt for low-cost providers that offer a wide range of investment options and competitive fees. Additionally, choose providers with solid reputations and excellent customer service to ensure a seamless and reliable experience.

As stated in my 2024 platforms outlook I would only opt for FCA-regulated platforms for pensions and these are Novia Global and Praeumium International. Both of these platforms have a similar cost of 0.35% a year with breakpoints for higher amounts.

For the trust here is a list of trust as of 2024 and the costs.

Table of the SIPP provider’s trusts for expats as of 2024:

ProviderSetup Fee (£)Annual Fee (£/PA)Establishment of Benefits Fee (£)Income Drawdown Fee (£/PA)Termination Fee (£)Able to Facilitate Insistent Clients
Novia Global International SIPP£0£180 (charged £45/quarter)£200£150 (PA)£0NO
Momentum International SIPP£300£500 (PA)£250£100 (PA)£250YES
The Sovereign International SIPP£300£300 (PA)£250£100 (PA)£250YES
STM International Pension Plan£150£150 (PA)£130£130 (PA)£155YES
IVCM Heritage SIPP£150£100 (PA)£250£300 (PA)£995N/A
The Harbour International SIPP£249£450 (PA)£150£150 (PA)£499YES

Fees associated with SIPPs can vary significantly among providers. When assessing fees, consider factors like annual management fees, investment charges, platform fees, and potential exit fees. Look for providers with transparent fee structures and competitive pricing. While low-cost providers may be attractive, it’s essential to evaluate overall value, considering factors such as investment choices, customer service, and platform functionality.

Exploring Investment Options

SIPPs provide a broad spectrum of investment options to align with various strategies and risk appetites. Explore options such as individual stocks, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), bonds, and cash holdings. Diversification is crucial, so aim to construct a portfolio that spans different asset classes. Research the investment choices offered by each SIPP provider, assessing their alignment with your investment goals and risk tolerance.

Summary

For me, there are only a few options to consider for expats and SIPP providers. This is because they are FCA-regulated, have good services and a smooth application process.

There are others in the market but this is my preferred option. If you are considering transferring your pension or starting a SIPP as an expat, then here are some articles and videos to help you decide which might be the best route for you.
