Although personally do see some downsides to Bali such as the traffic and the infrastructure in certain parts. It is a great place for a certain type of expats looking to move outside the U.K

Duration and Use: Allows a stay of up to 30 days with the possibility of extending once for an additional 30 days. This visa is useful for short-term visitors and those who want to explore Bali for up to two months.

Duration and Use: Offers a 60-day stay, which can be extended monthly for up to four months in total. It is often used by tourists who plan to stay longer than two months and by digital nomads exploring living in Bali for an extended period.

- Retirement Visa (KITAS)

Suitability: Ideal for digital nomads planning to relocate to Bali for extended periods without a traditional work contract.
Where would I pick?
While acknowledging this is very subjective and dependent on your circumstances and my circumstances would probably be very different to yours. Having lived in Asia for nearly 10 years and being very familiar with the area I would go more towards this region as I have found a great region to be based in and thoroughly enjoyed my time here.
Also, note that I don’t have any children and mainly work in Asia and the Middle East time zones being a mid-six figurer income a year earner would factor this into perspective. These are all significant factors that may differ for you.
If I had a clean slate I would pick Malaysia or Singapore with maybe part of the time in Bali to live outside the U.K.
This would give me the ability to trip to some of my favorite places such as Japan and live a life that would be feasible for me.
While, KL has great infrastructure, food, health care and parks with an okay MH2 VISA option for living. Many say that the downside to KL is that it’s not fun. But I have found that with most big cities it has most of the activities that I personally (and probably you as well) would want and when you mix with locals you find yourself having an enriching experience as they are mainly very warm and welcoming. The ability to get around in KL is great with cheap taxi options and the MRT line and if you want to go for weekend or travel trips in Asia you have a budget airline Air Asia that KL acts as a great hub as well as a good airline in Malaysia airlines for longer or better quality flights.
I would pick Singapore, for all the reasons above but as just a more advanced option it just does everything slightly better. The infrastructure is better, the places are cleaner and just better organized (probably the best in the world). However, with this comes the cost. I don’t just mean the cost of living, which is more expensive at 2/3 times the price of KL. But the taxes if you do business outside of Malaysia can be less than in Singapore, the Visa options are mostly better (unless you have a net worth of over $100 million) in Malaysia and a lot easier to obtain. While Singapore either requires a significant investment of around $S25 million in government bonds or around half in a certain business activity or project that helps the country. Or setting up a business and making yourself a director and paying yourself more than $S20,000 a month. Which would be subject to tax.
So, have always questioned whether would Singapore be worth it for those with a net worth of less than $100 million when you get 80% of the lifestyle in KL. So, most expats would opt for this option.
However, due to personal circumstances find myself in Bangkok, which for the much part is very similar to KL in Malaysia without the English speaking but as a pro, most people would suggest more vibrant and fun which would concur with (you can learn Thai it makes life a lot easier). During my time in Bangkok, have found it to be an amazing experience and wouldn’t want to change it.
I can live the life that I want to live (mostly the part I can’t do is walk around too easily) I can go to great parks that have lots of activities that I like doing. And have many Thai and Western friends.
I do think Thailand due to the tax and lifestyle is a great option in the world right now for all levels of expats. And would put it as the best all-round option for the reasons above plus the variety of life that you can have in Thailand.
But as acknowledged this is very subjective and wouldn’t be surprised if any of the six above were picked by expats for different reasons.
