Illustration only, not a forecast or personal advice. Both projections use the same growth rate before charges, with charges taken each year from the value of your investments. It ignores tax, currency movements, early-exit penalties and one-off charges, and investment values can fall as well as rise. Your own figures will differ.

How to find your real charges

The figure that matters is your total yearly cost: what you pay your adviser, the platform or bond provider, and the funds themselves. You can usually find it in:

  • your annual statement or “costs and charges” summary, which should show charges in money and as a percentage
  • the key information document for each fund, which shows its ongoing charges figure (OCF)
  • your original policy or plan documents, for offshore bonds and savings plans

Offshore bonds and savings plans sold through commission-based advisers often carry establishment charges for the first five to ten years, plus penalties if you leave early. Those charges are easy to miss on a statement, so if you’re not sure what you’re paying, we can work it out for you as part of a free review.

Why a 1% difference matters

Charges are taken every year from the whole value of your investments, including the growth you have already built up. That means the gap between a higher-charging and a lower-charging plan widens every year: a 1% difference on £200,000 can come to tens of thousands of pounds over 15 to 20 years, even when both plans earn exactly the same return before charges.

Questions about the calculator

Where do I find my total charges?

Look for the “costs and charges” section of your annual statement, which should add up adviser, platform and fund charges. If you hold an offshore bond, check your policy documents for establishment and administration charges too, or ask us to work it out for you.

Are the example charges accurate for my plan?

No. The figures for each type of plan are examples only, to get you started. Charges vary widely between providers and plans, so enter your own total for a meaningful result.

What growth rate does the calculator use?

It assumes 5% a year before charges for both options, which you can change under “Change the assumptions”. The growth rate affects both results equally – the difference comes from the charges.

Is 0.5% the only cost if I work with you?

No. Our advice fee is a flat 0.5% a year. You also pay platform and fund costs to the providers, which depend on what is chosen for you. The calculator uses an estimate of 0.5% for these, and your plan shows the exact figures before you decide anything.

Does the calculator include tax or exit penalties?

No. It ignores tax, currency movements, one-off charges and early-exit penalties. If you are thinking about moving out of an existing plan, the exit penalties and tax position can change the answer, so get advice before you make any changes.
