Transferring a UK pension to Thailand into an International SIPP (Self-Invested Personal Pension) can be a complex process, and it is advisable to seek professional advice from a qualified financial advisor with experience in international pension transfers.

If you have any questions about this, I currently live in Thailand and have an elite visa if that would help with the credibility of this blog. As a UK expat I do have certain things structured which help me live in Thailand.

Here are the general steps involved in transferring a UK pension to Thailand into an International SIPP:

  1. Determine eligibility: Before initiating the transfer, it is essential to confirm that the pension scheme in the UK allows transfers to an International SIPP, and the SIPP provider you choose accepts transfers from the UK.
  2. Choose an International SIPP provider: Research and select a reputable International SIPP provider that meets your requirements and provides investment options that align with your long-term goals.
  3. Obtain a transfer value: Contact your UK pension provider to request a transfer value statement, which will provide an estimate of the current value of your pension fund and any fees or charges associated with the transfer.
  4. Consult with a financial advisor: Seek advice from a qualified financial advisor with experience in international pension transfers to assess the implications of transferring your pension, such as potential tax consequences, currency exchange rates, and any legal or regulatory requirements.
  5. Complete transfer paperwork: Once you have decided to proceed with the transfer, you will need to complete the necessary paperwork provided by your International SIPP provider and submit it to your UK pension provider.
  6. Monitor the transfer process: It may take several weeks or months for the transfer process to complete, depending on the complexity of your pension scheme and the administrative requirements involved. Your financial advisor or International SIPP provider can help you monitor the progress of the transfer.
  7. Invest your pension: Once the transfer is complete, you can start investing your pension in accordance with the investment options provided by your International SIPP provider.

Useful TIPS:

Stay away from offshore bonds

Here are some links going over the commission that offshore bonds such as RL360 (that can pay IFA up to 5% upfront)

Only use FCA-regulated platforms such as:

  • Novia Global
  • Morningstar

These cost around 0.35% and are FEE-BASED ONLY.
